Santceloni was the capstone of our three week vacation through Spain and Portugal and it ended our honeymoon on a high note! The restaurant provided us with excellent service and made us feel welcome and special from the moment we arrived. One unique feature of this restaurant was that you could view the food being made and the chefs working behind a large glass viewing area. While a bit voyeuristic, it helped you really appreciate the preparation, effort, and teamwork that the staff demonstrated and the intricacy that goes into each dish. Our server immediately provided us with water, a sommelier provided wine recommendations, and while they have an a la carte option with prices around 50E per entree, we went right for the tasting menu.
The food was delicious and each dish was creatively designed and packed with flavor. We especially enjoyed the white gazpacho, duck lasagna, and lacquered white pork rib. Each of the other dishes were tasty in their own right, but these stood out in particular. Another amazing aspect of the restaurant was the cheese trolley, as two tables of cheese were carried over to us with a wide selection of Spanish and French cheeses. The staff made recommendations and then hacked off large chunks of cheese for us to try (needless to say we could not finish, but not out of lack of trying).
We also appreciated the personal service and special touch that the staff gave us. As they knew this was a special occasion, they provided my wife with a bouquet of flowers with the check.
During our trip, we had visited 9 Michelin-recognized restaurants and Santceloni ranked up there with the best. What really stood out to us was the service and the opportunity to better appreciate the chefs at their craft.
This is a two star Michelin restaurant. Every morsel of food was delicious. Why four stars? The Sommelier was awful. He seemed like he was bothered to have to talk to us. We simply wanted to have a conversation about The Spanish wine pairing vs the other wine pairing.
He was not Interested in our wine preferences and just wanted to leave our table as soon as possible. Weird. This is his job.
Our waiter Jorge could not have been nicer. The wine assistant Claire was super sweet.
Obviously the food was wonderful, but when you have two stars the bar is very high. You can't treat your clients disrespectfully and expect good feedback.
The cheese Fromager also was in a big hurry and did not pay attention to our preferences. We stated clearly our preference for softer goat and sheep cheese and he insisted on the Manchego. The cheese board was huge and impressive, but if you don't serve your guests their preference then what's the point?
Every employee on the staff has an effect on our experience. No one is above making an effort to please. On top of his initial disinterest the sommolier never asked once how we were enjoying the wine. He stood by himself the whole night.
